On Wednesday, October 16, we'll be upgrading our Confluence wiki software to version 5.2, so the wiki may be unavailable between 7:00 AM and 9:00 AM.
This is a minor upgrade so you probably won't notice too many changes to the existing interface. Here's a quick summary of some of the improvements in the new version (click images to enlarge them):

The migration of wiki content to a new server was successful. If you experience any problems with your wiki pages, please contact the Wiki Administrators.
Please note that if your space is using the default theme, you'll have to re-create any Space Shortcut links on the left sidebar. (If your space uses the Documentation Theme, your left sidebar links are unchanged.) You must have space administrator permissions to do this. To modify your Space Shortcuts:
1. Click the Configure Sidebar link | |
2. Click the Add Link button | |
3. If you see the page you want to link to among the Recently Viewed pages, click the page name and then the Insert button. If you don't see the page you want to link to, click the Search link, then start typing the page name. When it appears in the drop-down menu, click the page name and then the Insert button. | |
4. To move a shortcut up or down in the list, drag it by the 'handle' to the left of the shortcut name. To remove a shortcut, click the X button to the right of the shortcut name. | |
5. When your shortcut list is ready, click the Done button. You can always come back later to add/remove/rearrange shortcuts. |
The wiki will be undergoing major maintenance this weekend including a migration of all wiki content to a new server. Unfortunately this means that the wiki will be unavailable from Friday evening through Sunday night. If you anticipate needing to access certain wiki content over the weekend, please plan ahead and export the content (to PDF or HTML) before 5:00 PM on Friday so it will be available to you when the wiki is down. If you try to access the wiki over the weekend, you'll see a placeholder message that the wiki is unavailable.
When wiki service is restored on Monday, nothing will have changed with the wiki content or how you access it. The URLs, permissions, and all wiki features will be the same as before.
We regret that an extended outage period is necessary and appreciate your understanding and patience with the process. This maintenance will improve the performance and stability of the wiki for the long term. If you have any questions, please contact the Wiki Administrators.
The wiki may be unavailable during maintenance on Wednesday, July 31, between 7:00 AM and 8:00 AM.
As wiki usage increases, we have to balance our desire for nifty add-on features against the overall stability of the wiki. One of these add-ons, which allows users to preview and edit Office documents and PDFs within the wiki, has caused significant problems due to the system resources it requires as more people use the wiki. We've been working with the Confluence support team to troubleshoot this issue and the resulting system outages. They acknowledged that it is a problem in larger instances like ours and they strongly recommended that we disable the add-on. It appears that we have no choice but to take their recommendation or suffer more frequent system outages as the wiki expands.
So, we plan to disable the add-on tomorrow (Wednesday, May 8). When we do, you'll notice these changes:
Feature | Change | What To Do Now |
---|---|---|
Viewfile Macros | In wiki pages using any of the 'viewfile' macros to display an attached Office file or PDF, you'll now see an 'Unknown macro' error instead. |
To find instances of these macros in your pages, type the following search into the Search box at the top right of any screen: macroName:view* |
'View' and 'Edit in Office' | The attachments section of a page will no longer have 'View' or 'Edit in Office' links for each Office file and PDF. | To view a file, click the filename and choose to open it. To edit a file, click the filename and choose to save it, then work on it locally on your computer, save the changes, and re-attach it to the wiki. |
Import Word Document | There will no longer be an 'Import Word Document' option on the Tools menu. | To import the content of a Word document into a wiki page, copy the content of the document and paste it into a wiki page. |
It remains possible that we'll be able to re-enable at least some of these features in the future depending on further analysis of the resources required by each task, but they will be unavailable beginning May 8 until further notice.
The wiki may be unavailable during the upgrade on Wednesday, April 17, from 7:00 AM to 9:00 AM
Confluence 5 is a major upgrade to our wiki software and you'll notice some differences in the user interface. We've highlighted some of the changes below, with screenshots of the old look on the left and the new look on the right. You can click the screenshots to enlarge them and click the links within the feature descriptions to go to the Confluence Documentation site for more information (use the back button on your browser to return to Wiki@UCSF).
For detailed descriptions of all the changes in the new version, see Confluence 5.0 Release Notes and Confluence 5.1 Release Notes.
Jump to:
The new 'Create' button
To add a new page or blog post, click the Create button at the upper left of the screen. This button replaces the old Add drop-down menu. For more information on the Create button, see Creating Content.
The new space sidebar
For all spaces using the default theme*, the Browse menu has been replaced by a new sidebar which appears on the left side of every page and contains many of the options from the Browse menu, including links to browse pages or blog posts in the space. You can collapse and expand the sidebar by clicking its border. For more information about the sidebar, see Finding Content. Space administrators who wish to customize the sidebar may click the Configure Sidebar (see Configuring a Sidebar).
* If your space is using the Documentation Theme, see the note about the Documentation Theme below.
Breadcrumbs have moved
The breadcrumbs (which show you where your page is located within the page hierarchy) have been moved from the top left of the screen. They now display right above the page title. For more information, see Page in View Mode.
Rearranged header
The header has been streamlined and updated to include more useful buttons. On the left, you can click on the logo/Wiki@UCSF to go to the wiki Dashboard or click Spaces for the space directory or People for the people directory. On the right, a help menu includes links to online help resources and similar features. The icon for the workbox drop-down menu remains the same, and the icon for the personal drop-down menu is the user's profile picture rather than the user's name. For more information, see Page in View Mode.
Space administration
For all spaces using the default theme*, the new Space Tools link (visible only to space administrators) in the sidebar lets you access space administration and advanced features which were previously found under the Browse menu. For more information, see Administering a Space.
* If your space is using the Documentation Theme, see the note about the Documentation Theme below.
Expand icon
Previously Confluence used a
icon to indicate the presence of child pages or versions of attachments. Now it uses a icon. Click the icon to reveal the hidden content.
Google Calendar display
Unfortunately, the {google-calendar} macro currently used to display a Google Calendar in a wiki page is no longer available. After the upgrade, any pages containing the macro will display this error message:
However, you can still display a Google Calendar in a wiki page using the {iframe} macro. First, go into your Google Calendar settings and look for the calendar's iframe URL to embed. Click the customize link to set the options the way you want them, then copy only the part inside the initial quotation marks (highlighted in the sample screenshot below):
Then, go into your wiki page and add the iframe macro (just start typing {iframe} into your page and then select it from the drop-down menu). In the URL field, paste your calendar address, and scroll down to set any other options (height, width, etc.). Click the Save button to insert the macro into your page.
In the screenshot below, you'll see that the calendar on the left (being displayed by the iframe macro) looks exactly like the one on the right (using the old Google Calendar macro):
If you have any trouble with this process, please contact the Wiki Administrators for help.
Documentation Theme
Please note that spaces using the Documentation Theme (which already contained a sidebar) do not have the new sidebar and still display the old Browse menu. It has been relocated from the right side of the header bar to the left side. Use the Browse menu to access to features like Space Administration or Browse Pages. For more information, see Using the Documentation Theme.

This is a minor release which includes improvements to tables/macros and fixes some bugs. For more information, see the Confluence 4.3.5 Release Notes.
