40minCampus Updates

ALL

UCB:

  • Bancroft has four retirements occurring at month's end, including three in its administrative office; interviews for the Director/AUL for Special Collections position have taken place.
  • Bancroft's reading room access is reopening to the general public by appointment (Wednesday-Friday) sometime in July, date to be determined; the UC Berkeley Library generally is slated to offer regular services starting fall semester.
  • Campus HR has created a toolkit for Flexible Work Arrangements
  • SILS preparation training is taking place in the library
  • The University Archives is receiving an increasing number of gift-in-kind offers.
  • Minecraft campus replica projects (Blockeley University and Blockeley 1893) received much attention this spring: see this UC Berkeley News story

UC Davis:

  • Open to the general public July 20 by appointment
  • Flexible Work Arrangements to be established by Sept. 1
  • Continuing to push for recruitment of University Archivist
  • Pilot project on converting historical theses and dissertations to OA in HathiTrust. This is a copyright clearance follow up to leveraging the Google Book Digitization Project for scanning our print run of theses and dissertations. We're testing for rate of response and scalability, and hope to report on this at the UC Libraries Forum.
  • Adding Third World News and Third World Forum student newspapers to California Digital Newspaper Collection
  • Working with outgoing Dean of our School of Veterinary Medicine on transferring his papers.

UCI:

  • Audra and Elvia are working with the Dean for the School of Law (L. Song Richardson) to transfer her deanship papers. She's moved on to a new position as President of Colorado College. She will be missed!
  • Elvia has been providing consultation to the UCI Prison Pandemic project on navigating privacy and health information while providing access to incarcerated people's experiences with COVID. Exploring grant opportunities with this project. Also submitted a DLF panel proposal.
  • UCI Libraries is piloting a hybrid remote/onsite schedule for its employees starting in the fall. It is unclear how long the pilot will be, but administration has shown support for permanent agreements.
  • Elvia will be hosting a GSR position to work on a digital humanities project. Very interested in the Echoes of Seema project at UCSC, perhaps will reach out to that team to hear more about ArcGIS StoryMaps.

UCLA:

  • Opened to campus appointments, but need to close due to renovations following audit. Timeline is that it's done by start of fall quarter, at which time the library opens to normal capacity. Will continue ETAS through summer. Have been ramping up digitization services.
  • Campus take on Flexible Work Arrangements released yesterday, which should be sorted out by fall.
  • Centennial of UCLA collections, The Map and the Territory, will open on July 1 at the Fowler Museum.

UC Merced:

  • Working with some colleagues in Records Management on numerous collections (documents from campus administration) that have come under their purview over the years with the intent of relocating these materials to the UA.
  • Drafting a memo to our Provost to push for a campus policy on moving records to the UA.

UCR:

  • Opening 3 days a week by appt for UCR affiliated researchers
  • Website update for Special Collections
  • Andrea recently presented at Digital Humanities Summer Institute conference in Victoria, BC (virtual)
  • Noticing an increase in reference questions

UCSD:

  • We recently started adding campus-hosted podcasts to the archives and the digital collection. Most of them started around the time of campus shutdown and deal with many issues students, staff, and faculty were/are facing during the pandemic.
  • With the podcasts and other ongoing digital collections, we have established some new practices and procedures to address the questions we encountered with born-digital collections. As part of these procedures, we are developing ways to automate ingest processes and establish ways for donors to submit digital content.
  • Library will open (Su-F, 10a-6p) to campus community on June 29th as study space only, no services. Library staff are using the summer to ramp up and return to full services for the fall quarter.
  • Flexible Work Arrangement plan came out in May.

UC Born Digital Content CKG response https://docs.google.com/document/d/10xVS1uNQ_rIp_M8yoqyoykgXCTH8kyeCQ4YmY2_Hv9U/edit

-note: The UC Digital Preservation Strategy Working Group is defunct and has been replaced by the UC Digital Preservation Leadership Group

RMC meeting summary

-HB/AH: RMC seemed to be seeking more of an oversight role and pushed back a bit on the necessity of a "policy" on email archiving

Next step: Address Born Digital CKG notes and incorporate changes and go from there. It will also go to the Digital Preservation Leadership group, then probably needs to go to DOC if there is a systemwide task force. MC: would love to see this off our plate by the end of summer.

10minLeadership Transition: Berkeley to Davis and Irvine@Kathi Neal

Kevin will reach out to Elvia and email the group regarding meeting schedule, starting in August.

Action Items

  • Address Born Digital CKG notes and incorporate changes into Email Records Statement
  • Kevin will reach out to Elvia; schedule meetings
  • Reach out to Matt regarding the next edits to Email document
