Paid Family Leave

Workers who contribute to the State Disability Insurance (SDI) fund are entitled up to six weeks of partial pay each year while taking time off from work to: bond with a newborn baby, adopted or foster child; and care for a seriously ill parent, child, spouse or registered domestic partner.

Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI)

Federal disability insurance program for adults over 18 y.o. who have not reached retirement age and have a disability that prevents them from working. To be eligible to receive SSDI payments, you have to have earned enough work credits to qualify.  Applications of people with illnesses included on the "Compassionate Allowance List" will be fast-tracked; otherwise it may take 1 or 2 appeals to get approved. You must be on SSDI for 2 yrs before being able to receive Medicare. If currently receiving SDI payments, you should apply for SSDI in the 5th or 6th month of receiving SDI payments.



State Disability Insurance (SDI)

Disability Insurance provides partial wage replacement to eligible workers who are unable to work because of a disability for up to 52 weeks.



Genetically Handicapped Persons Program (GHPP)

Statewide health care benefit program for people 21 y.o. + with certain genetic illnesses including HD.

Supplemental Security Income (SSI)

Federal income supplement program designed to help aged, blind, and disabled people, who have little or no income. Provides cash to meet basic needs for food, clothing, and shelter.



Compassionate Allowance List

List of illnesses that fastracks patients for SSDI and SSI. Early onset AD, AD, FTD, PPA, CJD, Vascular Dementia, Mixed Dementia, PD Dementia, Lewy Body Dementia, PSP, CBD, glioblastoma and glioma grade iii and iv brain tumors are all on this list. HD not yet on the list, but legislation has been introduced.


AllTPD DischargeA TPD discharge relieves you from having to repay a William D. Ford Federal Direct Loan (Direct Loan) Program loan, Federal Family Education Loan (FFEL) Program loan, and/or Federal Perkins Loan (Perkins Loan) Program loan or complete a TEACH Grant service obligation on the basis of your total and permanent disability. Disabled parents who took out a lone for their child may also have their loan forgiven.
