Agenda:

  1. Roll Call
  2. Announcements
    1. December's meeting is 12/21. What will attendance look like? - Shu will send out email to see if attendance will be low enough that we should cancel.
    2. Any OA Week follow up comments?
      1. UCI is already planning for 2017. Bigger, more formal programming, bigger speaker. Draw bigger crowds? That's a puzzle. Next year hoping for Heather Joseph or similar.
      2. Sam from Berkeley. Meeting to review our events next week, but so far seems like it was successful. Deemphasized OA per se, focused on useful stuff. OA on the side rather than a main event.

      3. Rhonda from UCR: I wanted to let everyone know that Gabriel Gardner was our main OA Week speaker.  He was great!  I encourage all of you to look at his work. He studies the guerilla open access movement.  Each of his slides was full of data and had data visualization at the bottom of the slide.  He got our dicussion going on Oct 24 OA Week events.  Everyone learned a lot and considered OA from a broader perspective.

Oh and the schwag!  Thank you for sharing the information.  We were so happy with the results.  Everyone got a t-shirt, information and gadgets

  3. Demo readership analytics/metrics page that will be released with redesigned eScholarship (Monica Westin)
Monica showed a mockup of the new metrics page. This is what will launch with redesign. Open to further projects once the redesign is launched.
Spritzing up the existing stats, adding Altmetrics. Altmetrics only works with a DOI - so mostly stuff that came in through the publication management system for OA policy.
Graphs like academia.edu, maps, etc. - we track this stuff, can create things like that in the future. Need to know what features have greatest interest, how people are using existing data.
Marty Q: Heatmap of the world - are those easy? Can we get for each article?
Monica A: that was custom. Hoping to create it more automatically, for more levels.
Mitchell Q: I'd like to know where the links are coming from, e.g. is most traffic from Google? Other sites? Key search terms?
Monica A: referrals we should be able to get from Google Analytics. Seems like something we could implement. Search terms - less available because of Google & privacy issues.
Rhonda from chat: I need something quick (statistics, visual and otherwise) that I can take to meetings and put into reports.  I also think visuals help sell the IR.
Monica A: Agree, need to build out the visuality. Going forward, *which* statistics should we be tracking visually, because there are lots of things we track.
Shu Q: Do campuses have access to Altmetrics tool?
    Monica: will ask
    Shu: When is this launching?
Monica: Spring of 2017, as part of redesign.
Marty Q: Are the Altmetrics pulled into the publication management system?
Monica A: should be both, will follow up and get back to the group.
  4. Infographics to promote open access, eScholarship (Shu)
Mitchell's been working on something to promote OA and eScholarship. Anyone at other campuses?
Monica: Donald at Merced is working on something for COUL.
    Mat: nothing here.
Mitchell: Would like to create an adaptable template. Not easy to create something in a template because of graphical/design needs.
One helpful tool: https://www.easel.ly/ - You provide numbers, it helps create things based on templates.
Hoping to create something with reusability, tools to share things that don't require a lot of explanation, context, etc.
Sam: i don’t know how applicable these are, but i’ve enjoyed the data viz on the roar-map site:http://roarmap.eprints.org/dataviz.html
Mitchell: Trinity, nuclear test results. Runs as a film/loop.
Shu: also has a link to share, will send to group.
